The schedule is set and the volunteers are gearing up for the 2016 "No Limits" Youth Aviation Program. We have partnered with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Lee County for this 5 month event. MORE VOLUNTEERS ARE NEEDED! Our schedule is as follows:
January 9th: Wings Way, Lehigh – Introduction to aviation program and Planes movie. Twenty-six boys and girls turned out for this introductory event. We watched the movie "Planes" and learned a little about world geography and air racing. The kids then tested the mettle by making paper airplanes, launching them all the way across the parking lot and even getting one stuck in the trees! We had airplane parts relay races and concluded the day with assigning "tail numbers" to all of the youth. We got off to a great start. Pictures of the days events can be seen HERE. Many thanks to Paradise Coast Chapter 99s, Fort Myers Flying Club and the Sundowners Club for supplying volunteers for the day.
February 20th: Page Field – Bee Haydu (WASP) to participate and do her program for the youth; Career Day - professionals from Page Field will talk to the youth about various aviation industry jobs. After an informative presentation by Bee Haydu about her aviation career as a WASP, the kids departed for the flight line to meet professionals from the Lee County Sheriff Department, Lee County Mosquito Control, Airport Security Bomb sniffing dog team, airport operations and the airport fire department. After lunch, they learned about line ops, customer service, marketing, flight instruction, professional piloting careers and aircraft mechanic. For pictures of the days events click HERE.
March 19th:Shady Oaks, next to Terry Park, Fort Myers - Aviation Olympics - youth participate in individual and team events designed to test their knowledge of geography, phonetic alphabet, morse code, map reading and airplane terminology. Volunteer duties include: role model, encourage and cheer lead, proctor individual and team events.
April 16rd:SeaHawk Park, 1030 NW 28th Street, Cape Coral – Aviation extravaganza, RC airplanes, scavenger hunt, weather experiments. Volunteer duties include: role model, encourage and cheer lead, assist with scavenger hunt groups, basic weather experiments, play ATC with youth for a "fly the pattern"exercise, help assemble giant compass rose puzzle.
May 7th: Airport TBD – Young Eagles rides – our kids get to fly! Many thanks to our volunteers who came out to fly 14 kids and 7 adults, many of whom took their first ever airplane ride of any kind!
The day was bright and sunny after a late season cold front moved through SW FL. The pilots arrived to relative cool temperatures at 0900 to being their flight orientation and take their turns riding in planes. Long time EAA member, Sam James, gave the kids a briefing about aviation safety and explained a little about how airplanes fly. He took about half of the group to his hangar for a tour while the other half of the group received their pilot assignments and loaded up.
Since the group was relatively small and our pilots were willing, each flight lasted over 30 minutes. The flight put of LaBelle Airport headed west over the Caloosahatchee River, then south where the passengers got a chance to look for their houses and schools over Lehigh. They proceeded back to airport over the farm fields of SW FL. Some of the youth got the opportunity to fly. Thanks for CFII, Skip Bently, three kids who said they wanted to be pilots actually got their first lesson, complete with log book and AOPA pilot in training T shirt.
The flights marked the end of the five month long No Limits Aviation Program for the local Boys & Girls Club Youth where 99s, joined by volunteers from other local aviation groups, taught the kids about aviation through interactive hands on activities.
